Game On: Cheer On Your Team and Your Spine this Footy Season!

We are officially in the throes of the footy season, and the excitement is contagious! With footy fever hitting us hard, we’re decked out head to toe in our favourite team’s colours and eager to cheer them right onto victory. But remember, while we’re showing all this love to our favourite teams, our spines deserve just as much – if not more – attention and care!

Did you know your spine is YOUR number one fan? That’s right! It’s one of the most essential parts of your body, always supporting you from behind the scenes (and in front of the TV screen!).

The spine provides the overall structural support for your body. It encases and protects the spinal cord, a vital part of the central nervous system that carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body.

This is why, just like cheering on your favourite team, your spine deserves your full attention and support. So, show your spine some love by avoiding the dreaded couch slouch and adopting these healthy habits next time you’re catching the big game!

1. Sit Like a Pro:

  • Channel your inner athlete and sit properly: back straight, shoulders relaxed, and avoid tilting your head forward, backward, or sideways.
  • Use a chair with correct lumbar support, or throw a cushion behind your lower back for that extra comfort.
  • Engage your core muscles by sitting up straight and pulling your belly button towards your spine – you’re basically training while watching!

2. Halftime Stretch Fest:

  • Get up and move every 30 minutes to keep your spine happy. This can also come in handy when you need to blow off steam when you’re frustrated with the referee!
  • Use halftime or commercial breaks for a quick stretch or walk around the room – your spine will thank you.

3. Perfect View:

  • Adjust your TV to eye level to prevent neck strain – it’s like front-row seats without the neck ache!
  • Sit at a comfy distance – so you’re not craning your neck forward continuously throughout the game.

4. Hydration Huddle:

  • Keep a water bottle handy and stay hydrated to keep those spinal discs in prime condition.
  • Go easy on the caffeine and alcohol – hydration is key!

Plus, don’t forget to check out our Straighten Up app. It’s a fantastic tool to help improve your posture not just during footy season – but all year round. It’s packed with great features to help you sit correctly, stretch, take breaks, and improve your posture!

The app also features a simple three-minute stretching program designed to help improve your spinal health, stabilise core muscles and enhance overall wellbeing. Check it out for yourself and download it for free from the App Store or Google Play.
