How To Not Sacrifice Spinal Health During Christmas Day Preparations

The cornerstone of every Christmas is the feast shared by family and loved ones. Tables are loaded with platters of food and enjoyed by all present. Yet, those who worked hard to ensure everyone’s plates are full understand the preparation process is no easy task: particularly on your spine!

While it can be hard to take time out of the frantic preparations of a scrumptious Christmas meal and remain considerate of your spinal health, doing so will ensure you maximise the enjoyment of your festive period.

Here are some tips and tricks to keep your spine healthy during the Christmas Day rush!

  1. Pay Attention to your Posture: This is as true on Christmas day as it is every other day but making sure you remain attentive to your posture is absolutely critical. Feel yourself slouching? Pause and take a moment to straighten your posture.
  2. Take Breaks: This goes without saying, but taking regular breaks during Christmas lunch will do you wonders. Every half hour or so, step out of the kitchen, get off your feet and take a moment to relax and stretch. Your body will thank you!
  3. Work in Teams: Everything about Christmas screams community. From the meals right through to the presents. The preparation should be no different! Many hands make light work. Enlisting help in the kitchen to lift heavy dishes, stir pots, and clean-up will save you time and your back pain.
  4. Wear Supportive Shoes: Studies have shown that comfortable, supportive shoes with a good arch can help alleviate back pain. This includes during the Christmas day rush, when you and your loved ones might be on your feet for hours on end!
  5. Hydrate: As always, hydrating when prepping Christmas lunch is critical. On average, you should drink between 2-4 litres of water per day. When doing something as physically intense as cooking, this may rise. Regardless, always ensure there’s water on hand this festive season.
  6. Consult A Chiro: Don’t wait for the new year to prioritise your health! Visit findachiro.org.au to find your local ACA Chiropractor and give your spine the care it deserves this festive season!

Most importantly, remember to enjoy yourself! Christmas is a joyful occasion, a cause for celebration, and a day to spend invaluable time with family.
